In India, Asia and the Middle East - In tutto il mondo VESPA All over the world

India gains its independence in 1947, and by 1948, Piaggio is already exporting its products there. In 1960, the company decides to switch to building Vespas and Apes locally, signing a licensing agreement with Bajaj Auto Ltd. Production begins at a temporary site on the outskirts of what was then Bombay (now Mumbai); in 1963, a modern factory spanning 12,000 square meters is opened in Pune. The licence agreement continues until 1970: in the meantime, Vespas and Apes have taken over the roads of India.

Vespa is also an early export to other Asian countries: in Vietnam and Thailand (where many local Vespa clubs are established), in Malaysia and Singapore (where, following independence from Great Britain and up until the 1980s, Vespas are imported and assembled under licence by the East Asiatic Co. Ltd.), in Indonesia (where Vespas are assembled by Danmotor Vespa Indonesia between 1972 to 2001), in Japan and in the Philippines.

Right from the period immediately following the Second World War, Vespa also has a presence in the Middle East, in Iran, Egypt and Israel, where the first national Vespa Club is founded as early as the 1950s.

Today, Piaggio Group manufactures Vespas for the Indian and Asian markets at its plants in Baramati (India) and Vinh Phuc (Vietnam).
